John Pane

Chair – Electronic Frontiers Australia Inc (EFA)

John is the current chair of EFA.  Founded in 1994, EFA is a not-for-profit national organisation that works to ensure that technology makes our lives better, not worse. We promote the idea that digital rights are human rights.  Privacy policy, laws and regulation are one of our major areas of interest and influence in the digital rights sphere.

John is an internationally experienced and respected privacy professional and thought leader with 3 decades of working at the intersection of privacy, data protection and technology issues and policy.

Besides being a respected and passionate privacy advocate, John is also a sessional lecturer in privacy law and technology at RMIT, and consults as a subject matter expert and trusted adviser for various consultancies. His privacy, data protection and technology experience crosses multiple geographies and industry sectors – including (non-exclusively) government, communications, banking and finance, medical devices, consumer goods, not for profit, construction, legal, aged care, retail, logistics, gaming, and pharmaceuticals.

John has also occupied numerous operational privacy executive roles for Australia Post, Johnson & Johnson ASPAC and the Westpac Group and is a recipient of Australia’s first positive privacy award – the ‘Smith Award’ from the Australian Privacy Foundation in 2004.  He is also the co-founder of the Australia & New Zealand chapter of International Association of Privacy Professionals and served for several years as Board Director, President and Past President.

John is also active in the local community as a Justice of the Peace and soon to be as a Bail Justice.
